An Hidalgo County family is calling for action after an Edinburg police officer allegedly crashed his personal car onto their property and fled the scene.
Early Thursday morning Alfonso Jasso and his wife were woken up by neighbors after a car crashed into their 2010 Chevy Malibu that was sitting in their drive way.
"There was a vehicle down the road but no driver, the driver had fled the scene,” Jasso said.
By the time DPS responded to the incident, off-duty Edinburg Police officer Gilberto Luna arrived, claiming he was the driver.
"We aren't really sure if he was even the driver of the vehicle because he had left for a good amount of time and then he came back and said he was texting a driving and that he ran the stop sign and came into our property and damaged our vehicles,” Jasso said.
A driver running a stop sign and crashing into your vehicle is bad enough, but the Jasso family says it’s more disheartening to learn the person who did it was someone who is supposed to prevent this from happening in their very own community.
"I was very disappointed. I expected him to be a little more apologetic,” Jasso said. I was like why did you leave? And he said ‘I was nervous.’”
To make matters worse, Luna's insurance company called Jasso Monday and said they won’t pay for the estimated $13,000 in damages to the Malibu.
"He is an excluded driver which means he is not even supposed to be driving that vehicle and we are stuck with the bill. In other words his insurance said they will not cover it, that he is excluded and we have to go through our insurance,” Jasso said.
Jasso says he has tried to do everything he could to work it out with Luna.
"I went to go speak with them to see if we could work something out but they are starting to become uncooperative and they aren't answering or talking to us and just say tough luck,” Jasso said.
Jasso has since turned to Action 4 and said he will be filing a complaint with Edinburg Police for action.
Edinburg Police say they will look into the incident very seriously once the complaint is officially filed but were unaware of the incident.
