Brownsville resident Sergio Davila supports President Barack Obama's recommendations for gun control.

The executive orders include tougher penalties for people who lie on background checks and they give schools flexibility to use federal grant money to improve school safety.

Davila agrees with these and hopes the government implements even more penalties.

"(A person) may have the license (and) may be in (their) full rights to have a gun,” Davila said, “but what about (their) children? If they are home they can get to that, so I think that's what needs to be regulated.

Owners at Chuck’s Gun Shop off Paredes Road in Brownsville could not comment on camera, but said the president's proposal will just make it harder for law-abiding citizens to access legal weapons.

They add the government is not banning knives or cars which also kill people.

However Davila discredits that argument. He believes Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza, would've done far less damage with a knife.

"If he would've had a knife, he wouldn't have been able to kill 20 children, he would've been able to kill one or two, worst case scenario,” Davila said. “But with a gun he was able to kill 20."

Another proposal calls for mental health screenings for those who purchase guns.

It’s something Jennifer Martinez agrees with and hopes the government follow through with.

"For the people buying guns, maybe one (is) ok (to protect themselves from) the violent people that are (out there),” Martinez said. “But if they had good control they (would realize when someone is buying multiple guns), and they (could) research the reason why (that person would) want more guns."
