With no ice hockey on the horizon, the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo needed another sports tenant in a hurry, so the city and facility managers put a big push on to grab the indoor soccer franchise the Flash and relocate it from Monterrey, MX to the Rio Grande Valley. The announcement of the Flash completes an expansion for the PASL that has seen the league's ranks swell from 12 to 19 teams as it heads into its fifth season of play. The Flash will be operated by Monterrey Flash owner Gerardo Guerra Lozano. The Monterrey Flash are founding members and subsequent champions of the Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido. The Flash and the PASL's San Diego Sockers faced each other in last year's FIFRA Club Championships, with the Sockers winning by a narrow margin. "We welcome the opportunity to be a part of the fastest growing futbol rapido (arena soccer) league in the US," said Lozano. "State Farm Arena will be a great venue to showcase PASL arena soccer."
HIDALGO, TX -- “We have been working on this deal since 2005,” said City of Hidalgo Mayor Martin Cepeda. “It’s been a long time coming, and this is what it’s all about—bringing the very best family entertainment to the Rio Grande Valley.”
The Flash become the third Texas team in a six team Southwest Division. Joining the Rio Grande Valley Flash will be the Dallas Sidekicks, Texas (Beaumont) Strikers, Las Vegas Legends, Arizona (Prescott Valley) Storm, and Real Phoenix.
The PASL's 19 teams will compete for the Ron Newman Cup, which currently resides with the 13-time indoor champion San Diego Sockers.
Owned by the City of Hidalgo-Texas Municipal Facilities Corporation, State Farm Arena is located at 2600 North 10th Street (Hwy 336) in Hidalgo, Texas and seats 5,500 for arena soccer. "The PASL is very pleased to be working with Gerardo and the Flash as well as State Farm Arena," said PASL Commissioner Kevin Milliken. "We are confident the Flash will make their mark in the PASL this season."
Local talent is urged to try out for the team this Saturday and Sunday from 5-7pm and Monday and Tuesday from 7-9pm at the Golazo Soccer Arena. For more information regarding the team, tryouts, and the rest of the season, please visit www.rgvflash.com.
