EDINBURG, TX -- The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team opened the 2012 season with a 13-1 victory over the University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions on Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The game ended after six and a half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Broncs (1-0) took advantage of three hit batsmen in the first inning to put two runs on the board. With runners at first and second and one out, Vincent Mejia hit an RBI-single, and one batter later, Mike McCarthy used a sacrifice-fly to make it 2-0.

The Broncs broke it open in the second. With one out, Ryan Moye (0-1) walked Jason Webb and Derek Hagy. After a fielder’s choice error and a walk, Mejia hit a two-run single, Angel Ibanez hit an RBI-groundout and McCarthy belted a two-run home run to make it 8-0.

McCarthy added an RBI during a four-run sixth inning to finish with four RBI, tying his career-high while going 3-for-3.

Mejia finished 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, three RBI and one run scored while Webb went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, two walks and a career-high three runs scored.

The Broncs used seven pitchers for one inning each, with Dusten Knight (1-0) recording the win after striking out two in the second inning. Zach Zouzalik, Michael Zouzalik and Jonathan Sa combined to pitched perfect fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

The Scorpions (11-6) were led by Zach Cordia, who went 2-for-3 with a double out of the leadoff spot. Joel Fernandez drove in their lone run with a one-out single in the seventh off of Nolan Atkins.
