A basketball game between Santa Rosa ISD and Santa Maria ISD turned into a full court brawl Monday night.

It all happened at the Santa Rosa Middle School off Santa Cruz Avenue on the city's westside.

According to Santa Rosa’s police chief, the middle school game was heated with players being physical and fans in the stand jousting verbally throughout the evening.

Things escalated when the mother of a Santa Maria player darted onto the court to confront the referee.

The mother was escorted out of the gym by school security, but in a matter of minutes players, parents and students rushed the court in a full on fist fight.

Police say they are sorting through several statements to determine who will be charged with assault and/or disorderly conduct since several punches were thrown.

Santa Rosa and Primera police along with Cameron County constable’s and sheriff deputies all responded to the Santa Rosa Middle School to break up the crowd.

Police are looking for any camera phone video that may have captured the fight and say the investigation will take several days.

Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to call the Santa Rosa Police Department at (956) 636-1050.
