The Rio Grande Killer Bees (17-14-5) were able to secure a tie for third on the Berry Conference thanks to some stellar goaltending and the continued hot streak of Tomas Klempa as they went on to defeat the Laredo Bucks (13-21-0)Tuesday night at the State Farm Arena.

HIDALGO, TX --

Klempa’s third period strike was his sixth goal in the his last five games and it came in a timely fashion, a mere seconds after Laredo tied the game at two with three minutes left in the third period. Bees goaltender John Murray took care of the rest as he closed out the Bucks making 34 saves in the win.

It was a quiet first period as a particularly warm night made for some sticky ice, and limited chances for both teams.

Luckily for the Bees it was the ice that kick started their offense. As a Laredo Buck made his way for the puck in the neutral zone one a two-man advantage he hit a bad patch and stumbled; with the puck loose Jason Dixon sprung into action and rushed into the Laredo zone on a shorthanded breakaway where he sizzled a writer past Ryan Rondeau for the Bee’s first tally of the night.

Laredo’s Matt Hanson was able to answer for the Buck’s to tie it at one 2:22 into the first period.

The score stayed tied through the second, the calm before a third period storm.

With Greg Moore in the penalty box for hooking Aaron Lee took a cross crease pass and got the puck past Rondeau for a power-play goal.

With time winding down it looked as if Lee’s strike would serve as the game-winner, but Laredo refused to go without a fight. With only 3:06 left in the third Laredo crashed the net and Erik Boisvert was able to slip one past Murray to tie the game with the third coming to a close.

Enter Tomas Klempa.

Only seconds after the tying goal Klempa streaked in on the left wing side and slung a wrister past Rondeau to put the Bees back up. It was the kind of shot the red hot Klempa has been putting in for the past week and a half, making good on his selection as last week’s CHL Player of the Week.

An Aaron Boogaard insurance goal provided enough insurance to make Laredo’s man-advantage goal with 40 seconds left null.

The Bees will see the Bucks again this Friday as they head up to Laredo. Puck drop will be at 7:30.
