BROWNSVILLE, TX -- UTB closed out the first half of its Red River Athletic Conference matches with another 3-0 victory, this time over Southwestern Assemblies of God University Saturday at the Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

With the 25-16, 25-16, 25-15 victory, the Scorpions went a perfect 8-0 against RRAC opponents, and did not lose a single set. Only one team, Wiley College, scored at least 20 points in a match.

UTB, the 11th-ranked team in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll, is now 21-1 overall and has won 18 straight matches.

SAGU came to Brownsville with an impressive 18-2 record, but had faced a team the caliber of the Scorpions. The Lions are now 18-3 overall and finished the first half race with a 6-2 record.

"It's hard to beat us if you don't get us on the serve receive," Scorpion head coach Todd Lowery said. "A lot of the teams in the conference can't compete with us on the block. If we get into our game, you better be ready to defend against us."

The Scorpions played outstanding offensively, finishing with a .398 hitting percentage. UTB/TSC ranks 10th in the nation with a season hitting percentage of .289.

The offensive attack was balanced. Arlene Ferreira led the Scorpions with 10 kills, followed by Valquiria Caboclo and Judith Boel with seven each and Rafaella Dornelas with six. Setter Daianarah Bracero set up the offense with 38 assists.

Defensively, Anayeli Trevino had 14 digs and Arlene Ferreira 10. Talita Milasauskas led the blockers with three blocks.

UTB plays seven of its final eight season matches on the road, starting with a three-match road trip Oct. 16-17. The Scorpions have only one home match remaining Oct. 30 against Bacone College.
