LAREDO -- Dennis Ortiz, Evan Hardman and Tony Lerma combined for a six-hit shutout to lead UTB/TSC to a 10-0 victory over Texas A&M International University Tuesday at Dustdevil Field.
The non-conference win lifts the Scorpions to a season record of 21-20, marking the first in the NAIA era that the Scorpion baseball team has owned a winning record. UTB/TSC joined the NAIA in 2006.
TAMIU lost its 16th straight game and is now 10-23 for the season.
The victory capped a very successful month of March for the Scorpions. UTB/TSC went 17-7 in the month, playing 18 of those games at home.
Dennis Ortiz (2-0) was the starting and winning pitcher, allowing six hits over six innings. The Dustdevils did not get a hit off relievers Evan Hardman, who pitched one inning, and Tony Lerma, who pitched two.
The Scorpions jumped on TAMIU with three runs in the first, then added single runs in the second and fourth innings, two runs in the sixth and three runs in the ninth.
UTB/TSC had 12 hits, led by Jorge Camorlinga, who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Juan Munoz also added two hits and Ryan Macdonald scored twice.
The Scorpions next play a three-game series on the road at Jarvis Christian College Friday and Saturday, April 4-5. UTB/TSC is 5-1 in the RRAC South Zone, a mark that is tied by Wiley at 2-0 in games over the .500 mark.
