The billboard that stood for years in the south endzone of Tarpons Stadium, listing the lengthy and distinguished accomplishments of the Port Isabel football team, was torn down by Hurricane Dolly in the summer of 2008. This fall, that billboard stands proudly again for the first time in over four years, and the Fighting Fish of Big Blue are having their best season since before it went down.

Sinton has usually been a deadly opponent to Valley football teams in playoffs past, but this is an unusual Port Isabel squad, one that recalled Tarpons of days past by mauling the Pirates defense and advancing to a third round game for the first time in 8 seasons.

Port Isabel and Rio Hondo have always had a heated rivalry, and the 2012 edition of the game was no different. The Tarpons were only ahead 14-7 until a 4th quarter surge resulted in 22 quick points. A fight broke out on the field, which resulted in the game being called before the 48 minutes was complete.

In a reversal of roles, it was Hidalgo that used a pounding rush attack and strong defense to win on the road at Port Isabel, meaning 4 of 5 teams in District 32-3A are tied in losses at one apiece.

Port Isabel was down to La Feria 14-0 after one quarter, but then the Tarpons woke up, at one point scoring on 6 straight drives spanning the 3rd and 4th quarters and, with this win, took sole possession of first place in District 32-3A.

The Tarpons by twice coming back from halftime deficits, and the Cardinals by winning two games by big margins after suffering an early defeat.
