Mission wanted an unbeaten season and the 32-4A crown all to themselves. Mercedes wanted to give the Eagles their first loss and grab a share of the district championship. In the end, the Tigers defense and running back Matthew Guzman gave Mercedes fans the big victory at Tom Landry Stadium.

When former Texas Longhorns coach Darrell Royal passed away at the age of 88 from complications from Alzheimer's Disease, many college football fans remembered him as the innovator of the wishbone offense and a winner of multiple national titles. Rio Grande Valley fans also recall that Royal coached many of the best football players to ever come from this area.
