Sharyland alum Osiel Flores never stopped believing in himself, going from being a walk-on at UT-Brownsville to Division I UTPA, to being drafted by the Cleveland Indians. Now, the longtime catcher for the Edinburg Roadrunners has been hired as a roving catching instructor for the Pittsburgh Pirates after a chance meeting with a member of the Pirates front office.

Rutgers University fired basketball coach Mike Rice on Wednesday after a videotape aired showing him shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at players in practice and using gay slurs.

Texas-Pan American men's basketball head coach Ryan Marks and women's basketball coach Denny Downing have both been released by UTPA, as the school will not renew their expiring contracts. Marks went 39-89 in 4 seasons at UTPA, increasing his win total each year, while Downing's record was 51-68 over the same time frame.

Oscar De La Hoya is coming to the Valley this week, his 1st time back to promote a fight since 2004. And with the Golden Boy comes one of the most popular boxers in the world, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Both will be appearing at 3:30pm Thursday press conference at the McAllen Convention Center to promote Canelo's fight with Austin Trout at the Alamodome April 20th.
