The 50th edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine came out this week, and while it might be the "Bible of Texas Football" it's not the most adventurous publication out there.

I, like most folks who read DCTF, immediately went to the High School section to see the predictions on which teams will make the playoffs this season.

Out of 43 Valley teams profiled (anyone know why St. Joseph isn't in there? this is the 2nd straight year the magazine has refused to acknowledge the existence of the Bloodhounds), the master prognosticators only have 9 of them changing their playoff destinies, whether for good or ill. Basically just 5 postseason berths changing hands.

If the only reason you buy the magazine is for that, let me save you some ducats.

According to Texas Football, every local team that made the playoffs in 2008, will also make the playoffs in 2009, except:

Donna, Brownsville Porter, La Feria, Lyford, and Santa Maria.

According to Texas Football, every Valley squad that missed the postseason last year will do the same this year, except:

Rio Grande City, San Benito, Port Isabel, and Raymondville.

The 5A picks are interesting, but betting on the Tarpons and/or an Alex Leal-coached team to be playoff-bound is hardly going out on a limb.
