San Benito Mayor Joe Hernandez has surrendered to authorities after being indicted in the ongoing "Raspagate" scandal.
Hernandez appeared with his attorney at the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito on Tuesday morning.
A Cameron County grand jury indicted Hernandez for abuse of official capacity.
Hernandez appeared before a magistrate judge where he was issued a $5,000 dollar cash surety bond.
The San Benito mayor is accused of using his barber shop property to allow a mobile “raspa” or snow cone stand to operate against city ordinances.
Hernandez declined to comment while leaving the jail but told Action 4 News in a previous interview that he denies any wrongdoing.
In that previous interview, Hernandez said he takes his job as an elected official very seriously.
A court date for Hernandez was not immediately available.
