Authorities temporarily placed Browwnsville’s Veterans Memorial High School under lockdown after receiving reports about possible gunfire in Mexico.

Brownsville ISD officials confirmed the school was placed under a “soft lockdown” around 8:07 a.m. Friday.

School administrators reported hearing what they thought was gunfire coming from an area across the Rio Grande River.

U.S. Border Patrol agents, Brownsville police and Brownsville ISD police all checked the area.

Authorities gave approval to lift the lockdown at 8:59 a.m. Friday.

School district officials said parents were notified about the incident through the BISD’s new notification system.

Under a soft lockdown, students are told to remain inside the school building.

Veterans Memorial High School is located off Military Highway in northwest Brownsville less than a mile away from the Rio Grande.
