A man is behind bars for carjacking the marked unit of an Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputy overnight in Hargill.

According to dispatch, the white Expedition patrol unit was recovered an hour later, but they are still looking for an AR-15 assault rifle that was inside the unit.

It all started at about 3:25 a.m., when an HCSO deputy responded to a call about property damage at a Hargill home.

As the deputy was taking the caller’s report, a man jumped into the deputy’s unit and took, according to the report.

About an hour later, deputies found the missing unit at open field near Hargill, but the AR-15 assault rifle assigned to the deputy, as well as some ammunition, were missing from the unit.

Dispatch said the man was arrested at about 7:30 a.m. also in Hargill.

At this time, it is unclear what charges he will face or when he will be arraigned.
