A Reynosa man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggling more than $1.7 million dollars worth of cocaine into the United States.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 25-year-old Luis Gustavo Mejia-Ortez on Wednesday.
Mejia-Ortez drove up from Mexico the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge in a 2012 Volkswagen Bora.
Court records show that the car did not have a personal belongings and the car key was the only key on his keychain.
Customs officers sent Mejia-Ortez to secondary inspection where authorities found 22 packages with 53.35 pounds of cocaine in the fenders.
Mejia-Ortez remains in federal custody but bond information was not immediately available.
