A storm system that moved through the Valley in the overnight hours spawned an isolated area of intense rain, hail, and wind over the McAllen metro region.
In total, 4 ½ inches of rain was recorded in McAllen from the storm cell, that was part of the larger system.
Reports flooded the newsroom of up to pea to baseball sized hail falling, accumulating on the ground, resembling snow.
The hail in combination with winds in excess of 60 mph knocked out home and business windows, blew over signs, and damaged cars.
The system also produced 1 to 2 inches of rain in Cameron county, and up to 5 inches of rain in parts of Kenedy county.
Early Friday morning McAllen city crews continued to survey the damage in the area. They say most of the damage is in the northern part of the city.
Aside from brush and other debris, crews are also picking up dead birds from parking lots. Officials believe they may have been killed during the hail storm.
In Edinburg, the frontage road between Iowa and Canton Roads is closed due to water on the roadway.
Motorists are asked to find alternate routes.
Additionally, the Utilities Department reports trouble with the SCADA Communications System that controls the water distribution levels and pressure in the water towers and the water plants.
Crews are currently resetting the computer system and residents should not experience any service interruptions.
