Gunfire, chase reported on Mexican side of Veterans bridge

A tense calm has returned to Matamoros following reports of gunfire and chase near the Mexican side of the Veterans International Bridge.

It all happened off Avenida Lauro Villar around 3:49 p.m. Monday.

Residents used the social media network Twitter to report gunfire and chase there.

Authorities aren’t commenting at this time but residents reported seeing soldiers firing at suspects.

The incident happened near the Mexican side of the Veterans International Bridge and affected neighboring streets along the city’s eastside.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials told Action 4 News that all international bridges between Matamoros and Brownsville remained open in both directions.

Residents reported seeing ambulances at the scene but reports about any wounded or casualties was not immediately available.

According to reports from residents, everything had ended and was back under control after 4:30 p.m. Monday.
