When the temperatures start to drop the beds fill up.
“We’re at max capacity at over 67 people,” Juan Gomez, with the Salvation Army, told Action 4 News.
Thursday night, Gomez said, they had to be prepared for even more than the max….
"These aren't people that just don't have somewhere to stay,” Gomez explained.
“These are people that don't have heaters or heat in their homes. Sometimes it's just them seeking refuge from the weather---rather than not having a place to go."
Gomez said over 120 people showed up Thursday night---despite the large number they were ready.
"We always prepare ourselves so I can't say that I was completely surprised....but at the end of the day when the shelter manager comes in and tells me I'm a little surprised."
Pastor Anselmo Cruz said, while he cannot hold quite that many people in his small church in Rio Grande City, those who need a warm place stay will have one.
