It may not have arrived on Santa's sleigh, but Santa's helpers arrived just in time on Roosevelt Street in Harlingen.

Firefighters drove up in red fire truck filled with more than two dozen gifts, food for the holidays and free smoke detectors for a one lucky family.

It’s all part of “Hearts of Fire” a project sponsored by the Harlingen Firefighter Association for the past 11 years.

The family of six was very surprised by their act of kindness and the smiles were priceless.

Lt. Joe Ruedes told Action 4 News a similar act of kindness changed his life, so he and his fellow firemen are trying to give back.

“When I was 11 or so, the Austin Fire Department had a program called Blue Santa. They came to my house and gave me gifts, and I never forgot it” said Ruedes.

“I understand what they are going through; I was on the receiving in”.

Ruedes said that’s why he is active and involved in Harlingen’s Firefighter Association’s Hearts of Fire project.

“It changes lives” said Ruedes.
