A 28-year-old man is spending Christmas behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggle close to 10 pounds of meth inside the battery of his SUV.

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Anthony Wayne Keller on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man drove up from Mexico at the Hidaglo-Reynosa International Bridge in a 2004 Ford Expedition.

Customs officers sent Keller’s vehicle to secondary inspection where they found six packages with 9.83 pounds of meth inside the car battery.

Keller told investigators that a man he knew as “Flaco” told him to leave his doors unlocked on Sunday.

The 28-year-old man told officers that he knew he would be smuggling drugs but didn’t know what they would be.

Keller appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos in McAllen on Wednesday.

Court records show that Keller is an American citizen.

Judge Ramos denied bond for Keller until a Tuesday morning hearing.
