It’s a scam Rio Grande Valley residents are becoming all too familiar with.
But this time scammers are using veteran's as their target to get their hands on your money.
Tim Bowen is the manager at Gems Pancake House in Harlingen.
On Monday, he received a call from someone claiming to be with the 501(c)3 tax free donation for veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan.
He said they were asking for donations of $100 or more.
However, the supplies the caller said they needed, raised a red flag.
"They needed supplies for toiletry, hose, stockings and shirts, stuff like that" said Tim Bowen.
Mr. Bowen said he knows the VA well and said the government normally supplies most of those items.
That’s when he told the person on the phone he could not give money at this time and asked that they send him information.
That’s when the caller hung up.
"Usually you can get them to send you something in the mail, if your not able to donate at that time just in case you can send some later" said Tim Bowen.
Dolores Salinas with the Better Business Bureau said if you're not careful you could be swindled out of cash.
She said one thing to remember is never make a commitment over the phone and write down as much information as you can.
"Definitely the name of the organization, the address, the phone number, anything that would give us the opportunity to look into it further" said Dolores Salinas.
