Fire reported next to Santa Rosa Sugar Mill

Firefighters from communities in Cameron and Hidalgo Counties worked together to put out a fire in a pile of sugar cane next to the Santa Rosa Sugar Mill.

It all happened shortly at the sugar mill of Highway 107 shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the blaze started in a pile of sugar waiting to be processed.

Firefighters from Santa Rosa and other communities in Cameron and Hidalgo Counties all responded to the scene.

A cause of the fire remains unknown but Harlingen firefighters used a ladder truck to soak the sugar cane pile.

Crews were working to put out hotspots and flames as of 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.

The Santra Rosa Sugar Mill is a major employer in the area.

Investigators said the building is not threatened by the fire.
