Full air conditioning has been restored to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville.

Patients and staff in several spent several hours on Wednesday without air conditioning following a mechanical problem with one unit.

Valley Baptist Medical Center spokeswoman Teri Retana told Action 4 News that the technicians were immediately called.

Retana said the air conditioning problems did not affect the hospital's surgical intensive care unit and most operating rooms.

Hospital officials deployed several portable air conditioning units from their Brownsville and Harlingen facilities throughout the building.

Retana said that the air conditioning unit was fully operational and on-line right before 5 p.m. Wednesday but that it would take at least an hour to cool the entire building.

Action 4 News viewers first reported the air condition problems and said that other outages have happened in the past.

Retana responded saying that air conditioning is not a chronic problem for Valley Baptist Medical Center's Brownsville facility.

"Valley Baptist constantly invests in new equipment and invests in ongoing maintenance," Retana said.
