Kite boarder's drowning death reported off South Padre Island

Authorities are investigating the death of a Minnesota man who died in a kite boarding accident off South Padre Island.

Cameron County Pct. 1 deputy constables reported that 57-year-old Mark Ronald Hruby of Mora, Minnesota died in the Thursday afternoon accident.

Investigators told Action 4 News it all happened in the Laguna Madre about one mile north of South Padre Island's Beach Access 5.

Witnesses saw Hruby lose control of the kite to his kiteboard, fall into the bay and then get dragged.

A witness drove his boat to the location of the accident and pulled Hruby's body from the water.

Paramedics tried to revive the 57-year-old man and took him to a local hospital for treatment.

Cameron County Pct 1. Justice of the Peace Been Ochoa pronounced Hruby dead at 4 p.m. Wednesday and ordered an autopsy.

It's not clear if Hruby was an experience kiteboarder but preliminary results show that his cause of death was drowning.
