A Reynosa man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggle grenades, guns and ammunition into Mexico.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers found the items during a southbound inspection of a Chevrolet Tahoe at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge on Wednesday.
Court records identfied 48-year-old David Gonzalez-Herrera as the suspect.
It's not clear where or why Gonzalez-Herrera acquired the grenades, guns or ammunition but U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) agents have taken over the investigation.
About one and a half pages in a criminal complaint filed by ATF agents in the case were left blank.
Hidalgo/Pharr CBP Port Director Hector Mancha it's the first time that customs officers at either bridge have seized grenades.
Gonzalez-Herrera appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Peter Ormsby on Thursday.
Customs officials reported that the Gonzalez-Herrera is a Mexican national who lives in Reynosa but who was only visiting the United States.
Judge Ormsby denied bond for Gonzalez-Herrera until a Tuesday morning hearing.
