It's a night Earl Dixon and his 21-year-old son will never forget.

The two were returning to their home off Rabb road in La Feria, when three men approached them and forced the father and son out of the car.

According to Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio, the three men wanted to get inside their home.

When he refused to allow them in, Dixon was forced to kneel to the ground.

But in an act of bravery, Sheriff Lucio said Dixon was able to wrestle all three suspects and grab their gun.

"As they were running away, apparently he hit one of them, bot of them were able to get into the car, the assailant and the guy that had been shot,” said Lucio.

The two suspects took off in a stolen SUV.

Police found it later near the body of Francisco Moreno, who Lucio said was dropped off in a driveway off Karime circle.

"Apparently the driver found out the guy was dead and then found a nearby neighborhood so he could dump the body” said Lucio.

The third suspect, Roman Cardoza, took off on foot, but was unable to get far.

Both Dixon and his son took off after Cardoza and were able to hold him until La Feria police arrived.

Dixon was taken to the hospital for some head injuries he suffered during the struggle.

According to family member, who did not want to speak on camera, he is expected to be okay.

Police continue to investigate in this case, and are looking for a third suspect.
