No license in Texas? No vehicle.
House Bill 1047 is under consideration before the Texas Legislature in Austin.
The controversial bill would see a person’s car towed and impounded if they’re caught driving without a license.
And while cops aren't commenting, critics are.
Irving NAACP leader Anthony Bond is one of the proposal's critics.
“Civil rights groups believe the bill discriminates because they say minorities are more likely to drive without a license,” Bond told KTVT-TV in Dallas. “They want to know why the towing doesn't also extend to expired inspections and registrations.”
Tow truck operator Paul Borselino agrees with the bill saying the legislation would make the roads safer and benefit his business.
“It'd just be more money in our pockets because that's one less person on the road that might hit us,” he told KTVT.
It's unclear how many unlicensed drivers travel the roads in Texas.
But more than 12 percent of all drivers in California, which has a similar law, are believed to be unlicensed.
If the Texas bill passes, it would affect many of the state's 1.5 million undocumented immigrants who, along with other illegal drivers, could soon face steep consequences for getting behind the wheel.
