A Port Isabel man is behind bars after being accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl.

Port Isabel police arrested 46-year-old Quelen Herrera on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Herrera knew the girl through her family.

Herrera allegedly sexually abused the girl over a period of time but she made an outcry on Valentine’s Day.

Investigators said Herrera is an illegal immigrant from Mexico who lived in Port Isabel for the past four years.

Police said he worked in the kitchen of a restaurant on South Padre Island and it’s not believe there are other victims.

Herrera remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail under $300,000 dollars in bonds and an immigration detainer.
