Icy roads took a bite out of business Friday.
Many businesses closed, other opened late, but one Valley child day care center that did open had no business in the morning because no one was able to get to their location.
Joni Lozano said she woke up to no electricity in her home and no way to get to Tiny Texans Academy.
She said it would have been too dangerous to drive on the icy roads.
Icicles hanging from trees, grass and ice on the roads.
That's what people across the Valley saw when they woke up Friday morning, and when Joni Lozano woke up, she also got a call warning her about the road conditions.
"Not to attempt to go out there on the roads because of the danger," she said.
The danger of losing control of her vehicle just like more than 30 others did in Hidalgo County Friday morning.
"We don't want to risk the getting into a traffic accident or anything like that," said Lozano.
Lozano's plan was to drop her daughter off at Tiny Texas Academy, the child day care center that looks after the five year old, but instead her father helped her out by taking care of her so that Lozano wouldn't have to make the trip on the icy roads.
Tiny Texans Academy co-owner Efren Rivera, Jr. said Lozano was just one of many parents who just couldn't make their way to the academy to drop off their children.
"Due to the weather, either they cancelled or decided to stay home," said Rivera, Jr.
The rooms were empty.
There were no kids in the high chairs or babies in the cribs, and there was no sound of the pitter patter that Rivera is accustomed to.
"Every now and then you can hear them out there having fun just singing along," said Rivera. "They're always dancing doing some kind of activity."
But Rivera said he prepared for the absence of children.
He has teachers on standby just in case kids stop by.
Rivera said there are normally about 25 kids at the academy, but throughout the morning there was none, but Rivera said he's confident once the weather clears up, kids will start dropping by.
Rivera said there were only about a handful of children who showed up to the academy later in the day.
