With cold temperatures sticking around Harlingen residents shopped hardware stores for heaters and grocery stores for soups Wednesday and the hot items were flying-off the shelves.

By early Thursday morning Lowe's in Harlingen was completely sold out of space heaters.

Lowe’s Manager Cesar Olvera said about 80 percent of sales Wednesday were heaters, pipe insulation, faucet covers and fiber glass insulation - all in anticipation of the freezing temperatures.

Meanwhile at H-E-B, shoppers were stocking up on hot chocolate, canned soups and vegetables and beef for “caldo de res” or beef stew.

"(We’re making caldo de res) to keep us warm on this cold weather,” one shopper said. “I like (the cold weather) it's nice - it's a way to keep your family together at home.”

A Winter Texan from Michigan had to stock up on his monthly groceries before heading back indoors.
“We're not (liking this weather) - we're going to hibernate the rest of today - once we get home this will be it."

H-E-B Manager Ernie Abrego said in case of power loss, the store is prepared with generators to continue serving their customers.

Lowe's will remain open for regular business hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and H-E-B will also be open for regular business hours from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.
