Two Rio Grande Valley lawmakers have filed bills that would authorize southbound inspections for cars and pedestrians headed into Mexico.
Texas State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa (D-McAllen) filed Senate Bill 294 early Wednesday afternoon.
The bill authorizes the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) to perform the inspections at random posts within a one-mile radius of the border.
Hinojosa's bill was filed one day after Texas State Senator Eddie Lucio Jr (D-Brownsville) filed Senate Bill 288 authorizing DPS to investigate the feasability and cost of performing the southbound inspections.
Both bills are expected to be discussed and debated in the Texas Legislature session, which begins in January.
State Senator Hinojosa told Action 4 News that American law enforcement officials have been focused on stopping illegal drugs and immigrants from heading north.
But with rampant violence south of the border, Hinojosa said authorites now want to cut off the flow guns, ammunition and cash made from the sale of illegal drugs headed into Mexico.
Hinojosa said lawmakers will hold public hearings with local businesses to make sure they work.
He said he expects support from the Republican-majority legislature and Republican Gov. Rick Perry.
"I anticipate that there will tremendous support for this bill that will help stem the flow of guns into Mexico," Hinojosa told Action 4 News.
