Cascos claims discovery of 69 votes that make him winner

The Cameron County Judge's race has taken another twist.

Republican incumbent Carlos Cascos claims he has found a "mathematical error" that gives him 69 votes and make him the winner in the controversial race.

The Brownsville Herald reported on its website that the votes were left off a final tally for the recount.

The Herald reported that the tally sheets in question are all from the early vote.

The Brownsville-based newspaper reported that 66 Republican straight-party votes from Port Isabel and three ballots cast for Cascos in Cameron Park were not included.

Cascos had been declared the winner in the Nov. 2nd election but Democratic Party challenger John Wood claims that the recount made him the winner by five votes.

Cameron County Elections Administrator Roger Ortiz said on Monday that administrators only intended to recount votes from Brownsville's Precinct 54.

It's not clear how the Cascos' claims will affect the outcome of the recount or canvassing of the vote.
