A San Benito woman is out on bond after she allegedly tried to smuggle an illegal immigrant in the trunk of her car.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Claudia Villanueva on immigrant smuggling charges on Thursday.

The 26-year-old San Benito woman drove up from Mexico at Los Indios International Bridge in a black 2001 Chevrolet Malibu.

Customs officers referred her to secondary inspection where they allegedly found a 26-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico in the trunk of her car.

Villanueva appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Felix Recio in Brownsville on Friday morning.

Judge Recio issued Villanueva a $50,000 dollar bond with a $1,000 dollar deposit.

Court records show that Villanueva posted bond but is expected to appear back in court on Wednesday morning.
