Almost smooth sailing for Hidalgo County election

Some waited an hour to cast their vote in Weslaco during Tuesday’s election.

But it was not the long lines that kept them waiting, it was because the polling place was closed and some election officials did not show up.

"Three of the four workers didn't show up,” said Hidalgo Election Administrator Yvonne Ramon. “Two came late and one didn't show up at all.”

This caused the polling location to open late and extend its hours until 8 p.m.

"This is a list of our workers on election day,” said Ramon. “Any mark shows a spot where people didn't show up, they couldn't come, or they couldn’t fill the spot."

Another issue was that there were three write-in candidates on the ballot and Ramon said it takes time to get those votes counted.

"Those votes have to be taken manually,” said Ramon. “It's not an electronic tabulation after they run through the tabulator they are spit out and the ballot board has to manually count each vote."

In the end Ramon said the department marks the November 2010 election a success.
