A Brownsville man is behind bars after going on a rampage at a local restaurant.

Brownsville police arrested 44-year-old Joel Tovar on multiple charges at the La Casa de las Gorditas restaurant of Milpa Verde Drive on Tuesday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Tovar was at the restaurant when he allegedly became belligerent with workers.

It’s not clear what sparked the incident but police said Tovar went in the kitchen, grabbed a knife and threatened the cook.

Tovar allegedly got in his car and drove it towards an employee.

Officers arrived just as Tovar was leaving and arrested him on aggravated assault, terroristic threat and assault charges.

Tovar faced a Brownsville municipal judge on Wednesday morning where he was issued $36,000 dollars in bonds.
