Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies shoot knife-wielding suspect

Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies said they shot an illegal immigrant suspected in a DWI case in the leg after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife.

Deputies arrested 41-year-old Ubaldo Martinez on DWI and two aggravated assault of a public servant charges early Monday morning.

It all started when Martinez allegedly tried to stab a deputy off Tower and Schunior Road northeast of Edinburg shortly around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Martinez fled the scene and ended up underneath his mobile home at 6609 Valero Road.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino told Action 4 News that emerged with a knife and a piece of wood.

Deputies shot Martinez in the lower left leg when he allegedly lunged at them.

Martinez allegedly continued to fight using rocks and five gallon buckets filled with dirt.

Deputies said Martinez broke the windshield of a patrol unit in the process.

Paramedics rushed Martinez to the McAllen Medical Center where he was treated and released to deputies.

Sheriff Trevino reported on Monday morning that Martinez is an illegal immigrant who had two prior arrests for DWI.

Martinez posted bond in both cases before he could get deported.

Sheriff Trevino said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has placed a detainer against Martinez in this case.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Deputy that discharged weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident.  

Deputies involved will not be identified until it is ascertained that their lives are not in danger from retaliation attacks. 

Family members have stated that Martinez has deep hatred for police officer and had threatened to kill them.
