FEMA application deadlines loom

Diana volunteers at the Cameron Park Cultural Center in Brownsville and was relieved when she heard FEMA would be setting up shop there to take applications from those affected by Hurricane Alex.

Diana's one of those signing up for assistance after she says rain from the hurricane left her house completely soaked and with an old home, she feared her roof would come down on her so she and her family grabbed what they could and ran for cover somewhere else.

The skies have cleared, but Diana still deals with the damages left behind and for the lower income residents who live here, any extra money to fix up their damaged homes after Alex is more than welcome.

According to FEMA officials, more than 4 million dollars has already been allocated for housing assistance in this area and there's still time to see if you qualify for disaster aid stemming from Hurricane Alex with an October 4th deadline.

For those of you who found yourselves unemployed because of storm damage, the deadline to apply for disaster unemployment benefits is just days away on September 7th.

That's why FEMA encourages everyone to call now to find out if they qualify for funds.

Spokesperson David Gonzalez tells Action 4 News, “If you are self employed, and you suffered damages, you can apply for the disaster unemployment benefits."

Diana says no one should be fearful of the process. It only requires information about where you live and who lives with you and, of course, the damages Alex did to your home or property.
