Mexican authorities are keeping a watchful eye on the rising waters of the Rio Grande.

Reynosa city officials sent out alerts stating late Monday morning warning areas residents about possible flooding.

Hurricane Alex hit the Tamaulipas coast last but dumped heavy rains in the mountains surrounding Monterrey.

That rain is now headed downstream and is making its way into the Rio Grande River watershed.

Reynosa officials warned that the river could jump its banks by 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Several seven colonias and 10 ejidos, or ranch towns, along the river are at risk of flooding.

Reynosa city officials said the greatest risk is in the Ejidos Reynosa Diaz, El Blanco and Corrales.

Also at risk, are the Colonia 10 de Mayo, Del Prado, Manuel Tarrega, Praderas Oriente and Ferr. Poniente.

Some parts of Reynosa still have standing water and raw sewage from Hurricane Alex.

In the Rio Grande Valley, Granjeno and other communities in southern Hidalgo County are protected from flooding by the concrete levee-fence.

International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) officials told Action 4 News in a Sunday interview that they are ready to divert water from the Rio Grande to prevent flooding.

Action 4 News will continue to monitor the dangerous situation in the river.
