Valley auto thefts on the rise

It’s an uncomfortable feeling when you get to the parking lot and find that you're car is missing but according to an Allstate report released on Thursday that’s exactly what’s going on here in the valley.

“As a matter of fact we had a claim yesterday for a stolen vehicle," said Rick Ortiz is an Allstate agent in Brownsville.

Ortiz told Action 4 auto theft numbers in the valley jumped to 6%.

“We’ve found that GMC, SUV’s and trucks are the most popular,” said Ortiz in relation to the most stolen.

Most of which Ortiz told Action 4 head south, “Officers have told us is that the SUV and trucks are used to smuggle not only drugs and human trafficking because they are able to carry more weight."

According to Allstate almost half of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked and one out of every 5 vehicles had the keys still in it.

Action 4 spotted an early model Toyota RAV 4 with the windows wide open in the Big Lots parking lot.

Action 4 asked the owner who didn’t want to be on camera why?

He responded he just hopes they don’t steal it.

But hoping isn’t enough for law enforcement.

Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique with the Brownsville Police Department told Action 4, “When they are selling it to people over there in Mexico it’s very difficult to get them back."

For both law enforcement and insurance agencies they told us it’s about being realistic to avoid becoming a statistic.
