A Valley resident said he’s concerned for his family’s health every time he walks into Johnny’s True Value.
The store is located in Harlingen.
Nathaniel Torbett said he saw an employee smoking in the store.
There’s a Harlingen city ordinance that bans smoking in public places and places of employment except for bars, nightclubs and dog racing tracks.
Johnny’s True Value is none of the above.
Torbett said something needs to be done.
He said he thinks smoking in buildings is harmful to anyone’s health especially his daughter’s.
“It was a real problem for me because I love my daughter, and she’s the most important thing for me,” said Torbett.
The manager of the hardware store wouldn’t go on camera with Action 4 News, but he said he’s aware of the ordinance and is dealing with the situation internally.
The Harlingen city manager said Torbett must first file a sworn complaint, and then the code enforcement officers can investigate.
If the employee is caught, he could be fined up to 500 dollars.
