An ongoing dispute between Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos and a group of defense attorneys has been left hanging.
Moises Salas and several other defense attorneys sued Villalobos two weeks ago.
They allege they’ve been put on a “blacklist” to where their clients can’t get probation or plea bargains.
Both sides of case met before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Wednesday afternoon.
Lawyers representing Villalobos and the defense attorneys agreed to negotiate and submit a proposed order to a federal judge by 3 p.m. today.
Court records show that the deadline passed without any agreed order being filed.
A spokesman for Villalobos did not return inquiries for comment but the district attorney said in a past statement he denies the allegations.
Court records showed an attorney representing Villalobos filed a motion saying he’d rather have an “open file” policy.
That would give any defense attorney the right to inspect all the contents of a prosecutor’s case file.
Villalobos further requested another hearing in the case to resolve other matters.
Salas declined to comment citing the ongoing lawsuit.
His attorney Peter Ferraro filed a letter in court saying that Villalobos had refused to sign any agreed order.
A proposed order filed by Ferraro shows the defense attorneys want Judge Morgan to sign an order saying Villalobos will treat all defense attorneys fairly.
