A federal judge sentenced a former Brownsville customs officer to 11 years and three months in prison for his role in a bribery, drug and immigrant smuggling scheme.
Federal authorities arrested 41-year-old Sergio Lopez Hernandez in January.
The former U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspector pled guilty in January to accepting $150,000 in bribes to let cocaine and illegal immigrants through his post between July 2008 and January 2009.
As part of his guilty plea, Hernandez agreed to surrender $82,250 dollars seized during his January arrest.
The 41-year-old former customs officer appeared for sentencing before U.S. District Court Judge Hilda Tagle on Thursday morning.
Judge Tagle sentenced Hernandez to 11 years and three months in federal prison to be followed by five years or probation and a $10,000 fine.
