WILMINGTON, DEL. (AP) -- An initial creditors meeting in the bankruptcy of Freedom Communications Holdings Inc. has been postponed until next month.

A U.S. trustee's attorney in Delaware opened a meeting Monday morning but said the hearing would be continued because the company has not filed financial statements or schedules.

Chief Financial Officer Mark McEachen said Freedom will file a bankruptcy plan and disclosure statements within two weeks, and financial statements by the end of the month.

A hearing was scheduled later Monday on efforts by Freedom's creditors committee and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation to force the company to turn over documents.

Freedom, which owns The Orange County Register in California, dozens of other newspapers and eight televisions stations, filed for bankruptcy protection last month.

In Texas, Freedom's holdings are The Brownsville Herald, the Valley Morning Star of Harlingen, The Monitor of McAllen, Odessa American, the Mid-Valley Town Crier of Weslaco, and KFDM-TV in Beaumont, Texas.
