ELSA, TEXAS -- Funeral arrangements are pending for a 9-year-old girl and her father killed on their way to school Friday morning.

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety said Luis Diaz ran a stop sign at the intersection of Mile 19 and Val Verde near Elsa and ran into a car.

The impact killed Genesis Salazar and her father.

DPS has reminded Rio Grande Valley drivers to follow all posted traffic signs, especially in rural areas, to avoid tragedies like this one.

"There's not much traffic here, we take it for granted that there's not going to be any traffic at all," explained Trooper Johnny Hernandez.  "But unfortunately, we had a double fatality.  That's why we advise drivers if you see a stop sign, please stop, look both ways and make sure you have a clear view of what you're going to get into."

Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District has set up an account to help the family with funeral expenses.

Donations can be made at any First National Bank in care of Sandra Salazar.

School administrators said grief counselors would be on hand Monday at Avila Elementary for students and staff.
