Women caught with $400,000 in their purses

Two San Benito women remain behind bars after they allegedly tried to smuggle almost $400,000 dollars into Mexico in their purses and SUV.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Karla Judith Torres and Zu-Haidy Berenice Torres on cash smuggling charges on Wednesday.

A criminal complaint filed in their reveals that they were into Mexico at the Los Indios International Bridge when they were stopped by customs officers.

The two were referred to secondary inspection where officers allegedly found 14 vacuum sealed packages hidden in the lining of their purses.

More packages were allegedly found more packages under the rear third seat of their 2003 Ford Explorer.

The money inside the packages totaled $399,113 dollars.

Court records show that both women remain in custody after appearing before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Felix Recio on Thursday morning.
