A Brownsville-based supermarket chain has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Lopez Supermarkets, Inc. owner Alicia Lopez filed for bankruptcy in Brownsville last week.

Neither Lopez nor her attorney Eduardo Rodriguez returned calls for comment on Wednesday afternoon.

Bankruptcy court records show that the company made $1.67 million dollars during 2008 but had $1.7 million in expenses.

A profit and loss statement showed that Lopez Supermarkets, Inc. fell short $33,144 dollars.

The company’s filing listed 21 creditors including the Cameron County Tax Office.

The Lopez family started their business in the 1950s.

The Brownsville-based supermarket chain has since divided up into companies owned by various family members.

The stores listed in the Chapter 11 filing are Lopez Supermarket #1 off Ringgold Street and Lopez Supermarket #5 off Southmost Road.

Both stores remain open for business.
