A murder suspect from New York City is behind bars in Falfurrias.
Border Patrol agents found Arber Mustafaj headed north in remote area northwest of Falfurrias checkpoint on Tuesday night.
The 35-year-old man told agents he was a legal permanent resident of the United States.
Border Patrol spokesman John Lopez told Action 4 News that agents took Mustafaj back to the Falfurrias checkpoint because he did not have any immigration documents on him.
Lopez said a background check confirmed Mustafaj was born in the former nation of Yugoslavia and is a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
But the background check also revealed Mustafaj was wanted in a murder case in New York City.
The 35-year-old man is now in the Brooks County Jail awaiting extradition.
A March 2000 article from the New York Daily News reported that a man with the same name and age shot a man in the face in the Bronx.
The New York Daily News reported the motive as jealousy over his wife riding in another man's Mercedes.
The newspaper reported that the Arber Mustafaj named in the March 2000 shooting had a previous criminal record and had been linked to a gang named "The YACS" because the group's members hailed from Yugoslavia, Albania, Croatia and Serbia.
