Two Cameron County men are going to serve more than a year of prison after buying guns that were taken south of the border.

U.S. Bureau  of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) agents arrested Ismael Padilla and Miguel Angel Longoria in February and March.

Court records show both men are American citizens but lived in Matamoros when they bought high-powered assault rifles in McAllen and Brownsville.

Prosecutors allege both men lied on a federal form about where they lived when they bought the weapons.

Longoria was accused of buying the gun for somebody in Mexico.

The two men pleaded guilty to different federal gun charges in April.

Padilla and Longoria appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Andrew S. Hanen on Monday morning.

Judge Hanen sentenced both men to 18 months in federal prison to be followed by two years probation.

Court records show Longoria was taken into immediate custody and must complete a GED and vocational training while in prison.

Handed ordered Padilla to report to prison on August 27.

ATF officials told Action 4 News in previous interviews that many guns that are “straw purchased” in similar Rio Grande Valley cases end up in the hands of Mexican drug traffickers.

Both the United States and Mexico have pledged to curb weapons trafficking.
