Layoffs coming to Donna ISD

Hundreds of jobs are on the line at Donna Independent School District.

Superintendent Roberto Loredo said Monday the district is overstaffed by as many as 500 employees.

The staggering findings came from a Region One report on staff-to-student ratios.

Donna ISD is now in the process of pinpointing where cutbacks or scheduling changes are needed for non-teaching departments only, like security and custodial positions.

The district has expressed plans to eliminate at least 100 positions.

A hiring freeze is already in effect and will continue, but a final plan of action will come after a special board meeting on Tuesday, July 21 at 5 p.m.

The superintendent also said the same report indicated Donna ISD teachers are the lowest paid in the Rio Grande Valley.
